Investing In Silver 101
75Why Invest In Silver?
A wise investor will always ask themselves why they should invest in something. The reasons for investing in silver may a first glance seem simple. Silver is traditionally seen as a safe bet against inflation. The price of silver is seen as something that is relatively stable and secure. But in difficult financial times even secure investments may fluctuate as many investors act on fear.
The important thing to realize though, is that when markets are in turmoil due to economic worries that things with intrinsic value are always a safe bet in the long run. There will always be a demand for silver because it is a limited resource. Stocks in companies may rise and fall but commodities like silver will always have value.
Silver Coins & Bullion
Of course there are numerous ways that one can invest in Silver. Some of these methods are direct investments like Silver coins or bullion. Other methods are indirect like stocks in mining companies or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). It's important to realize that every method of investing in silver has it's own risks and rewards. Any potential investor should research their chosen method carefully before investing.
A rather fun way to invest is in Silver coins. Even this method of investing has different options. You need to decide if you are going to invest in numismatic coins where part of the value is not in the actual silver content of the coin but in the rarity and collectibility of the coin. Or are you going to invest in bullion coins where 100% of the value is in the silver content of the coin. If you're going down the latter route you may also want to consider investing in silver bullion.
Silver Mining Stocks
An indirect way of investing in silver is through the purchase of stock in a silver mining company. This method may be more rewarding but less secure than a direct investment in silver. As with any stock the price may go down as well as up. There are many factors that affect the price of mining stocks such as production costs, mining strikes, political upheaval, changes in mining regulations to name but a few. But a carefully placed investment in a good mining company can pay off big time in a way that a more traditional investment in actual silver can not.
Exchange-Traded Funds
A recently introduced financial product is the ETF or Exchange-Traded Fund. This is essentially like a mutual fund that can be traded like a stock. The introduction of silver based ETFs has been blamed by many for the recent rise in the price of silver. Investing in a silver based ETF isn't for everyone but it can be a good way to invest in silver indirectly while reducing the risk of investing in just one mining stock.
The ETF acts like a basket into which several silver based stocks are placed. This spreads the risk as you're not just investing in one company. The advantage of an ETF over a mutual fund are that Exchange-Traded Funds can be bought and sold in much the same way as you would by regular stock.

Very interesting. I hear so much about investing in gold but haven't heard much about investing in silver. I will do some research into silver mining companies, and will ask my financial adviser about silver investments the next time we meet.
This is such a well written and informative Hub. I have been thinking about investing in silver for a long time but simply didn't see the value in it. I had even toyed around with gold investments but am now leaning toward silver. Thanks for sharing.
People say invest in gold, but silver can be just as secure, sometimes even more so. I think silver is a great investment, thanks for pointing it out.
